About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Horta at Praça Infante Dom Henrique 16, Café Volga is a beloved local café that perfectly blends traditional Azorean charm with a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere. This café has earned a sterling reputation for serving honest, flavorful dishes that celebrate the rich culinary heritage of the Azores, all while offering excellent value and friendly, attentive service.

Step inside or settle into one of the inviting outdoor seats and prepare to be charmed by panoramic views of Pico island and the historic harbor—a setting that perfectly complements Café Volga’s inviting ambiance. Whether you come for a casual coffee or a hearty meal, the experience here feels effortlessly authentic and comfortably nostalgic.

The menu at Café Volga is a delightful exploration of local flavors and comforting classics. Among the standout dishes, the Francesinha—a traditional Portuguese sandwich smothered in rich sauce—is a feast that diners rave about, a must-try for anyone eager to indulge in something truly iconic. The “Burger” and the “Forestiera Burger” are widely praised for their juicy, perfectly seasoned patties and fresh accompaniments, striking a harmonious balance between simplicity and gourmet flair.

For those seeking a taste of the sea, the Lulas Guisadas (Stewed Squid), often featured as a daily special, offers tender squid bathed in a savory sauce, showcasing the region’s fresh seafood bounty. The Belo Bitoque de Vaca da Ilha, a succulent meat dish, is another highlight that brings the essence of island beef to the table with lovely, robust flavors.

Complementing these dishes are lighter bites such as the Hambúrguer Simples and the Azinhas de Frango com Molho de Limão (chicken wings with lemon sauce), which have become beloved comfort foods here, with each bite bursting with bright, zesty notes against perfectly crispy textures. And for those who appreciate a good cup of coffee, Café Sical’s rich blends, along with expertly crafted cappuccinos, provide the perfect aromatic pick-me-up.

Guests frequently mention the heartwarming atmosphere, where the staff’s warmth and efficiency make every visit feel like coming home. Joachim Holl sums it up perfectly: “Super good egg omelette, best Azorian atmosphere, good prices. Perfect.” This cups the essence of Café Volga—a place where flavor and friendliness come as a package.

As Stephen S.M. experienced, the outdoor seating makes for an ideal spot to enjoy a cappuccino or cerveza while soaking in the scenic harbor views and lively street life. His recommendation of the chicken wings and garlic bread as appetizers further proves that Café Volga knows how to innovate within traditional offerings, creating a dining experience that keeps visitors returning.

Whether you’re stopping by for breakfast, lunch, or an afternoon coffee, Café Volga is a rare gem where honest cooking shines and local culture is alive in every bite and conversation. As Denis Philippov aptly put it, it’s “a fine spot for honest food, fair value, and an easy return visit.”

For anyone visiting Horta, Café Volga is more than a café—it’s a memorable taste of the Azores, served with genuine hospitality and a welcoming smile.

Great cappuccino and the service is excellent. The outdoor seating was a great spot to grab a drink with a great view of Pico and rhe Harbour. The appetizers were very good! Get the chicken wings and garlic bread. They're doing something different and it works. The forestiera burger is one of the best I've had. Good spot for ice cream and my friends liked the breakfast but I didn't get to try. They also speak excellent English! Great prices.

Cafe Volga is a little gem where flavour takes centre stage - simple, delicious dishes served at prices that make one smile rather than wince. The service is warm and efficient, with just the right touch of attentiveness. As for the restroom - let’s say it’s compact, but serviceable, and hardly a reason to stay away. All told, a fine spot for honest food, fair value, and an easy return visit.

This is a great place to sit and have a snack or light meal. Service can be slow when busy, but with seating inside and out there's time to relax and take in the view of the marina and Pico--on a clear day.

You can seat crossing the road just to have a lunch watching the marina.
